Would a DL-44 heavy blaster pistol be out of place on the hip of an Imperial Officer?
This I can help with , there are a few things you need to get right when doing Imperial officers.
Despite the several variations of the officer class, there was two common traits amongst them which were all individuals of this rank were ambitious, and ethnocentric humans who fully support the Emperor's policy of subjugating non-human races.
A couple of Officer class that I think would fit into your fic and their break downs + a short summery:
-
Security Officers--members of Imperial Intelligence
--responsible for monitoring as well as ferreting out signs of rebellious activity within the ranks of the Empire(Any such threats were first uncovered, arrested, and eventually neutralized)
--also known as "loyalty officers" by the troops
--at least one stationed at every installation(be it a remote outpost to a major facility in the Core)
--duties were the same regardless of their post
--proudly wore the gray uniform of Imperial Intelligence
--openly admitted to their assignments
--security officers often explained the best interests of the Empire with their job requiring them to be both noticed and feared
--Security officers powers allowed them to reprimand and report on individuals who were suspect with them being given broad discretion powers to ensure that an Imperial facility did not fall into rebel hands
--certain officers were often assigned undercover operations at various starships or facilities(Their duty was to observe their comrades and determine which one of them posed a legitimate threat to the New Order. The number of agents assigned to these posts were never truly known and the fear of discovery was an effective means of preventing sedition as Imperial personnel were never sure if their comrades were security officers undercover. Though their position meant that they needed to remain in hiding, these undercover security officers were allowed to intervene when necessary)
--agents on starships of the Imperial Navy had the overriding duty to ensure that the vessel did not fall into enemy hands.
--constant fear of the presence of security agents at any Imperial facility created an atmosphere of fear where personnel were required to follow the principles of the New Order or be branded a traitor
--they were given extensive training for their role and had to learn counter-insurgency tactics, marksmanship, untraceable execution methods and starship engineering
--told to commit suicide rather than reveal information to their captors

Star Destroyer Officers
--officers who were selected for their skill, loyalty and leadership abilities
--a number of officers had attained the position through political connections despite their actual talent
--an officer stationed onto a Star Destroyer received a boost in their career(Regardless of entry)
--Life on a Star Destroyer for officers involved a constant state of competition due to the command structure being arranged in a manner that promoted such an atmosphere
--individuals were often unsure of their place within their hierarchy which led to power struggles of every kind between various Star Destroyer officers
--management of these officers was often at the discretion of the ship commander who often took liberties with their orders
--while such assignments were coveted by the ranks of such officers, they were also feared as failure for something beyond an individuals control meant that there were at times severe forms of punishment
--they had the fastest promotion rate yet the worst service record and even the lowest life expectancy amongst the officer classes(This fact was well known amongst the ranks of the various officer ranks and even the military elite.)
-- Star Destroyer officers were often nervous as well as insecure men who had little chance of a successful military career
-- Despite these problems within such assignments, the position onboard a Star Destroyer with its ruthless competition was often a beneficial placement for clever individuals
--there was little room for mistakes or error and only those with keen minds as well as strong purpose prospered without which, an officer would be doomed.

Equipment
When not in a combat situation, officers wore standard issue uniforms. These uniforms consisted of a double-breasted tunic, trousers, black leather belt with code disc on the buckle, black leather boots, black leather gloves (optional) and a hat with matching disk. Uniform colors varied from olive-green for naval and senior army officers to black for stormtrooper (army) officers. Small silver code cylinders were kept in pockets on either side of the chest, near the shoulders. These cylinders were used as security permits to allow the officer to access areas under his or her authority.
All officers wear a rank insignia on their uniform. Similar to chevrons, these plaques are worn on the left side of the chest and often consist of red and blue squares. In some cases, yellow squares are present to indicate a Governor or Moff position.
If in a combat situation, officers wore a specialized armor matching their uniform color. This armor plating covered the upper torso and head. AT-ST commanders often wore armor close to these sets of armor. Death star troopers also wore this armor.
Although officers were trained in the use of the standard E-11 blaster rifle, they rarely carried weapons while on board capital ships. When in combat, officers wore holstered pistols.

Officer Rank Insignia PlaquesA rank plaque consisted of a rectangular metal chrome plate fitted with raised colored squares. It was designed to be worn on the top left torso region of Imperial service uniforms, dress uniforms and even on battle armor. If an officer’s function demanded code cylinders (containing encrypted data and high level access codes), they were worn on either side of the rank plaque. As code cylinders indicated importance, they were frequently referred to as “rank cylinders”. The colored squares of rank plaques were typically red, blue or yellow, and arranged in single or double rows. Very low ranking officers, like Imperial Academy cadets, were commonly fitted with only a single colored square, while top ranking officers, like grand moffs, displayed up to 12 squares. Because of the colorful display, fellow servicemen could easily recognize rank from a distance.
There were many similarities among the rank plaque designs of the Imperial Navy, the Imperial Army, and the Imperial Stormtrooper Corps. For instance, all three military branches had lieutenants displaying their rank with two red squares placed on top of two blue squares. But there were also many sub-branches, specialized units and divisions within the imperial military. Manny of these deviated from the mainstream double rowed, red and blue rank insignia. The majority of the alternate rank displays were arranged in single rows. It was not uncommon to see Imperial Navy, Army and Stormtrooper officers wearing single rowed rank plaques. Also the ISB officers of COMPNOR made use of single rowed rank plaques. There have also been alterations to the plaque, such as in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Yavin, where a temporary ranking system was implemented until the Imperial Military was reorganized as a result of the events of the Battle of Yavin
Imperial Navy The Imperial Navy utilized plaques, or placks, to signify their rank, which typically involved red and blue squares, on the top and bottom of the plaque, respectively, as well as code cylinders. The specialist officers had their own variants, although the specific rank is different, and the code cylinders, unlike the formal positions and/or line officers, solely served as a decorative purpose. Although they are generally absolute, the extent of relationship between a position and rank has at times varied. In general, there were three different categories for Imperial ranks: Position, which dealt with current assignments to a specific ship or unit; Line ranks, held by line officers or the men who command the bridge crew, captain ships, and hoist their flag over fleets; and specialist ranks, for personnel of the Flight, Support, and Engineering branches. The line rank and position generally shared the same plackard, but the specialist ranks had their own placks.
Midshipmen were the lowest position within the Imperial Navy, and were known to hold the rank of Ensign in line ranks. They held two squares.
The position of Lieutenant was held by all but the commanding officer of the ship, regardless of rank, and the ranks included in the position included Junior Lieutenant (Junior Lt.), Senior Lieutenant (Senior Lt.), Junior Commander (Junior Cmdr.), and to some extent Senior Commander (Senior Cmdr.). They held four squares as well as one code cylinder.
The position of Captain was always held by the commanding officer of an individual ship, which was held by Senior Captains and, to some extent, Senior Commanders. In addition, Senior Captains also commanded small groups of ships composed of escorts or light cruisers, groups small enough to not qualify under the squadron level. They held six squares and, depending on the specific relationship between the position and rank, can hold one or two code cylinders. The plaque itself also is shared to some extent with the position of Admiral, Commodore, or Commander.
The position of Admiral, or more specifically Systems Admiral, is shared with the positions of Commodore and Commander, and were generally held for the System Forces of the Imperial Navy. These positions are technically different from a squadron commander due to the System Forces being ranked between a Fleet and a Squadron (the latter being the main practical-subunit of the former). However, as most of the System Forces in practice contained only one squadron, the systems admiral and the squadron are the same officer. Commanders, in addition, were an unofficial way of addressing the Admiral, the official position of the squadron. Because of the narrow view, it shared Captain plackard and its higher rank of Fleet Admiral, in addition to its own plack, which is itself composed of eight squares and two code cylinders. The line rank equivalents were the Senior Captain (to some extent), the Rear Admiral, and the Vice-Admiral (to some extent).
The Fleet Admiral commanded a fleet, and is usually the senior officer of a sector. It shared the line ranks of Vice Admiral and Admiral, which was composed of ten squares and three code cylinders.
The High Admiral was an honorary position within the fleet, alongside the higher up Warlord, and were often held by either Grand Admirals or Moffs. The High Admiral had twelve squares, as well as four code cylinders, and shared its rank with Admiral.
The specialist ranks were for personnel of the three primary branches within the Imperial Navy: The Flight Branch, the Support Branch, and the Engineering Branch, and held a similar ranking system to that of the Imperial Army. The very few promoted beyond General were promoted into the line at the ranks of vice admiral, although they generally retained the honorific branch titles of air marshal, war commissar, and master engineer. Their ranks, besides General, included Colonel, Major, Commander, Captain, Lieutenant, and Officer, which were the equivalent of Rear Admiral, Senior Captain, Senior Cmdr., Junior Cmdr., Senior Lt., Junior Lt., and Ensign, respectively. For the junior ranks of Captain and lower, their titles were also prefixed, depending on the specific branch they belonged to, by flight, support, or engineering, with Flight Branch pilots also having their own positional titles: squadron leader, wing commander, and group captain.
Besides the above, specialist officers also possessed additional key code cylinders depending on their duties: Generals with large base or project commands often received code cylinders of a squadron or fleet commander, and TIE squadron leaders, namely flight captains, featured the insignia of a ship's captain, as fighter units are considered the equivalent of a small ship command. The specialist officers placks, in order from Officer to General, included four squares, four squares plus two code cylinders, six squares, six squares plus two code cylinders, eight squares plus one code cylinder, eight squares plus two code cylinders, and four vertical pairs of squares separated from each other plus one code cylinder.
Although the code cylinders of the specialists in the Imperial Navy served no purpose other than decoration, the line ranks and positions featured an additional use for them: besides relating to their fleet responsibilities, the code cylinders were designed to regulate computer usage aboard Imperial Navy ships. They were not usually worn when off-duty, and new code cylinders were assigned with every new assignment.
Imperial ArmyThe position of High General was indicated by a single strip of six red squares and three code cylinders, although it sometimes was shown as having the same colors as a Colonel and a standard General.A Chief in the Imperial Army had two red squares on the right, and four yellow squares on the left, with two code cylinders., while a standard general, sometimes, depicted as a full set of six yellow bars, although it sometimes is also the rank of a captain.
Stormtrooper CorpsThe rank of Commander for the Stormtrooper Corps, when in officer attire, was indicated by four blue squares on the left and two red squares on the right, with two cylinders.
DescendantstOver a hundred years after the death of Emperor Palpatine, under the Fel Empire and later during the Darth Krayt Galactic Empire and the Empire-in-exile, rank plaques of similar design were still in use. At this time the Imperial forces wore the insignia on the top center torso region and alternately on the collar of uniform.
