The whining was how they showed his slipping to the darkside, show most notably when he kills the sand people. But I agree it could have been done and shown much better, he didn't need to be a petulant child, but Lucas turned out to be a shit writer when doing it on his own.

What did you guys think of Kylo ? I liked him. People complain that he isn't Darth Vader but he's not ment to be. He is a troubled young man who was struggling between the darkside and the light. Unlike Anakin though we arnt watching a good person with noble intentions slip into darkness, were watching a man who wants to embrace darkness but his own fears and feelings are holding him back. His love for his family pulling him towards the light. I like him because he is actually a complex character with his own faults and short comings. If they do it right you will get to see the subtle transformation as he finishes his training and fully embraces the darkside

What Shadow said, a lot of the complaints I've seen calling him a bitch (not here though) immediately compare him to Darth Vader....when the entire point of his character was he was trying to be a wannabe Darth Vader, ironically he's more like his grandfather than he thinks though pre-armor, but in the end he was a wannabe Sith Lord who was feeling torn between light and dark still. Which minus the wannabe Sith part is what we were supposed to see in Revenge of the Sith with Anakin a troubled young man torn between the light and the dark who makes a choice to go dark...only where Anakin did it for love and to protect Padme and his future babies out of desperation in a moment where everything went as wrong as it could...Kylo did it purely to become more evil and powerful, he might feel that the Darkside is the only way to bring order to the galaxy but at the end of the day he went there because Darth Vader was a fucking badass and he desperately wanted to be like Darth Vader, and ironically in a way at the end of the movie....he ascends to a greater darkness than Vader. In the new EU a major plotpoint with Vader is that if he can't turn Luke then he'll destroy him because Luke and Luke's presence reminds him and brings out the memories of the good man he used to be, but when push came to shove Vader chose his saving his son and the light over destroying his son and the dark.
On the other hand Kylo was also pulled between the light and dark by his fathers presence and also sought to extinguish his light, but where Vader couldn't bring himself to see his son die/be killed, Kylo gave over in an act so powerful and dark that it almost briefly drove Rey to the darkside (she was ready to kill his ass....granted it would have been cathartic as fuck) was felt by Leia across the galaxy, Snoke felt it happen which is why he decided to move forward Kylo's training and if what I read about the little marker Luke was at at the end being a memorial to Han was true then even fucking Luke felt it happen. That's a pretty potent ass ripple through the Force for a single individual. There was more at work with that then just a man dying. The whiny wannabe we saw in this movie isn't going to be around much longer.
Also to his credit the dude barely flinched in his robes when he got shot by a bowcaster that sends Stormtroopers flying and was going all berserker punching his wound to increase the pain and his dark power and was winning the fight for a while....he may have been a whiny wannabe Sith but the dude can take hits like a boss.

Sums up my opinion too, more or less.

I'm excited to see where he goes......and also for Master Luke to give him a brutal smackdown like Luke gave Jacen in the old EU when Jacen went Sith. Just because I want to see Luke as a fully realized Jedi Master be a total hardcore badass.

I'll be happy with either of those saber styles for her honestly, the double pike is kinda cool but....it'd be kind of cool to see her mix saber and non saber combat into a flowing web of badass attacks. Or just finally get a main character good guy with a double bladed lightsaber in Disney canon. Not sure if I'd really have a preference. - I am curious who her mother is though, like I said earlier I bet its an equivalent of Mara Jade who was Force Sensitive and was killed by Kylo, but I've seen a few theories that it's Captain Phasma.

Because they were personal. Well, that's a nice little touch.

yea, it also strengthens the ties between the books they are making and the movie.

yep.....I think that the franchise is in good hands.......that and with the amount of money Star Wars just made them, Disney will do all they can to keep the cash cow fat and happy.
