Galactic Expansion
A Star Wars Avatar Crossover fanfiction by: Jacob Sparks
I do not own Star Wars or Avatar. Only those characters imagined by me do not belong to their owners.
Part 1: Arrival
The Star Destroyer Thrawn, named in honor of the Grand Admiral, arrived over the new gas giant EY-12427’s seventh moon two days ahead of schedule. On board was a contingent of the 501st Legion all of them hardened veterans of the Clone wars. In particular of note was Storm Trooper Commander Kardin, an Arc Trooper transferred to the 501st in the latter months of the war. He had quickly proven his loyalty to the Empire and earned his position in the 501st early on in the war with the Rebellion. Today in the aftermath of the Empire’s defeat at Endor the hatred of the Rebellion was at an all time high. The veterans of the 501st were ready to show the Rebellion what the Elite of the Elite were capable of.
When Kardin had been told his contingent would be sent to clear out a new planet as a mining colony for Cortosis he was annoyed to say the least. That is until he heard why they had been chosen. They had been hand selected by High Colonel Rebecca Artansas, a somewhat young but decorated and talented officer. Kardin had worked with her before, they had first met during the ground battle on Yavin IV after the destruction of the first Death Star, and fought together in several battles and skirmishes in the days leading up to Hoth. He had not seen her since his contingent had been shifted to the forces attacking Hoth. She had been merely a major at the time, but she had impressed Kardin at Yavin, fighting at the front of the conflict side by side with the Troopers under her command. Kardin had known many enlisted officers, and not many had the balls to charge a Rebel line leading the charge personally.
Kardin turned his head towards her on the other side of the bridge. She was tall, standing six foot nine, only two inches shorter than Kardin himself. Her scarlet hair was in an intricate braid down to her shoulder blades contrasting greatly with her dark officers uniform. Her eyes a vibrant green like the lightsabers of the Jedi Kardin once served under. Her figure was one that could make many a woman jealous, but she was not extremely slender by any measure. She had a lean athletically muscled body from years of training hard and fighting a war. Kardin knew for a fact she could fight close quarters with some of the strongest men in the Empire and had a good chance of coming out on top. On her belt there were two Thermal Detonators, a custom knife in a black Krayt hide sheathe, and a DL-44 Heavy Blaster Pistol, an odd choice in blaster pistol for an Imperial Officer but one Kardin thought gave her a certain presence other officers lacked.
“Okay, I want probe droids deployed across the moon, I want every inch of that rock, no matter how insignificant in at least one photograph or so help me you’ll wish you had just disappointed Darth Vader.” Rebecca barked, her voice stern and cold, she had the weight of ensuring this didn’t turn into Endor two on her shoulders so Kardin could understand the point of the threat. The rookie crew of the Star Destroyer gulped and began setting the probe droids to search the planet.
“How long before we should have the droids return ma’am?” One of the ensigns asked nervously, his voice cracking a bit.
“A full day, enough time to ensure we document the moon in both day and night. I want to ensure we can get any native populations recorded. No matter how primitive they seem.” Rebecca looked the ensign dead in the eyes, Kardin stifled a chuckle as the rookie looked like he’d pass out.
“Ye…yes ma’a..m..” The Ensign says his voice cracking again. I turn towards the viewport and watch as the small specks of the probe droids descend from the ship to the moon below.
“Probes deployed ma’am” Another of the crew says while the Ensign stares at his monitor to avoid looking at Rebecca. Kardin smirked under his helmet, Rebecca always has had a way of making the lower ranking officers trip over themselves. He was glad to see she hadn’t changed much in the years since Cloud City.
“Excellent, until the probe droids return remain in stable orbit, everyone not needed here on the bridge rest up, train, or whatever you see fit to prepare for tomorrow, I want to lead a small squad down first before we set up our garrison.” Rebecca said looking over the crew. “Now, unless anyone needs me I’ll be in the gym.” With that she turned and left the bridge. As the Star Destroyer’s Crew continued working Kardin turned and left the bridge as well.
The corridors on the Thrawn were still spotless and shining, even after the month of travel from Kuat to this world on the edge of the Unknown Region. Mouse droids whirred up and down the corridors and the members of the 501st marched through the corridors talking about the Rebellion, or about what kind of dangers might be faced on the moon’s surface. Kardin saluted and was saluted by the Troopers, his brothers, as he walked. He knew where he was going, every Star Destroyer had the same layout, the uniformity made it so troops could change ships and still know where everything was. Kardin had walked this same path so many times he could do it backwards and with his eyes closed.
The door to the ships gym slid open as he stepped towards them, and closed as he stepped through. He glanced around the massive workout space and spotted Rebecca in the back part of the room sparring with a combat training droid, she had shed her officer’s coat leaving only the black tank top undershirt. Her hands were wrapped in bandages to protect them from the hard durasteel of the droid. Kardin walked close but stayed at a distance not wanting to distract her and risk her temper. He leaned against the wall and watched quietly, wondering if she had picked up any new tricks since the last time he had watcher her spar, or the last time they had sparred for that matter.
The clanker opened with a straight punch which Rebecca dodged with a slight motion of her head, she wasted no time in moving forward and slamming her elbow into the droids head causing it to recoil back. The droid however was not that easy, the torso rotated around and it caught itself then swung its leg up towards her face, Rebecca blocked the kick and stepped back from the droid as it righted itself on its feet. Her eyes scanned the clankers body for tells, and as soon as the droid lunged forward to strike she was already ready. She slid to the outside of the clankers attack grabbing its arm with one hand and using the other to take advantage of its momentum and slam it’s head into the floor. There was a loud gong sound as durasteel met durasteel. The droid’s photoreceptors flickered for a few moments before it slipped offline. Rebecca let out a breath and relaxed her body, as she did Kardin began clapping.
“I see you haven’t lost your touch at disabling an opponent Rebecca. I admit I was worried you’d been up in an office since your promotion and had forgotten how to fight.” Kardin took off his helmet sitting it on one of the benches.
“You would worry about that wouldn’t you Kardin. Unlike some officers I realize my body is as much a weapon as any blade or blaster. I’d rather keep myself in the peak of physical condition than relax and loose my touch, to use your phrasing.” She said as she took off the bandages. “Is there something you wanted? Or did you just want to watch me demolish a combat droid?” She walked over to him and looked him dead in the eyes.
“I was curious actually, how much have you been told about this moon, do we have any intel on it? Or are we essentially blind here until our probe droids collect their intel?” Kardin asked narrowing his gaze at her. “If you have any information that could cause my brothers to be in danger if we don’t know about it I’d suggest you tell me now.”
“Oh? And what if I do and decide you don’t need to know Kardin, what will you do. I’m your superior, you can’t order me to tell you.” Her eyes narrowed on his. “Unless you plan on attacking a superior officer.”
“Is that an open challenge then Rebecca? You know I’ve never been one to pass up an opportunity like that, especially if it means I can protect my brothers.” Kardin’s fingers twitched his hand moving towards the handle of the vibroblade on his belt.
“Maybe it is, the question is do you have what it takes? As I recall you never were able to beat me.” Rebecca’s hand similarly moved towards her vibroblade almost like a mirror. Neither one moved their eyes from the others. “So Commander Kardin? Do you have what it takes?” For a split second the galaxy seemed to stop, both grabbed and drew their vibroblades at the same time, the blades, twins of each other, clashing and bouncing away from each other.
“I think you are misremembering.” Kardin smiled and allowed himself a laugh. “As I recall we generally had draws very similar to that whenever we sparred.”
“Please, you’re the only one old enough to misremember.” Rebecca’s eyes softened and she exhaled as she laughed a bit as well. The cold mask of an Imperial Officer fading and the vibrant young woman with a lust for adventure, and a desire to see the stars shined through. “Though maybe I could have told people I kicked a Storm Trooper Commanders ass so I could keep people from being dumb enough to mess with me.”
“Nice to see you’re still the same woman under that façade of cold Imperial logic.” Kardin put out his hand as he said it. “And I’m glad you still have your dagger.”
“I’d never dream of losing it. It reminds me every day what we lost over Yavin, and what we have been working to forge since.” She held up her vibrodagger in one hand, the handle brown stone with the symbol of the Empire carved in it. As she did she took Kardins other hand gripping it tightly and shaking it before letting go again. Her dagger was an exact twin to Kardin’s, forced from the metal from the first Death Stars destruction. The chunks of metal had landed in one of the stone columns as they captured the Rebel Base. They had decided to turn the metal and stone into a memento to remember the day, and a weapon they could use to help destroy the Rebels every step of the way.
“A better Galaxy, a Galaxy where war isn’t a regular occurrence, a strong Galaxy that will last a hundred centuries.” Kardin said nodding.
“Exactly, we are superior and the Empire proves that, we are the strongest force in the Galaxy, we protect the people, and those damned Rebels are to blind to see what good we’ve done for the Galaxy. And now the Emperor is dead and those Rebels are acting like they are a legitimate government. It sickens me.” Rebecca clenched her fist. “I swore an oath to uphold the glory of the Empire, and I plan on writing the declaration of this moons rule under the Empire in the blood of any filthy non-humans that exist on this damned rock of Cortosis.”
“You have my full support in that, and the full support of the 501st. This world will be under Imperial Control before you can say Grand Admiral Rebecca Artansas.” Kardin smiled and saluted her.
“That’ll be the day, Kardin. Now, if you’ll excuse me I’m going to hit the showers, get some dinner and get to my quarters early, I want to catch up on my readings and get an early night once I do. We’ll have a busy day tomorrow when those probe droids return. You would do well to get yourself prepared as well Kardin, you’re going to be part of the squad I take to the moon’s surface.” Kardin nodded as Rebecca shifted back to her stern Imperial Officer stance. “Until then Commander Kardin.” They saluted each other and she left the gym. Kardin smiled and walked over to the weights to work out some. Whatever this moon had in store he wasn’t afraid. The 501st, Vader’s Fist, was the only thing orbiting this gas giant worth being feared.
