Here it is, my first official attempt at a fanfiction ever. Hope you enjoy. Got a bit dark but it's about the villains so...yeah. Anyway enjoy.
Unalaq smiled as the ship carrying his now exiled brother left the port. His plan had worked flawlessly, his father had turned on Tonraq like a raging Platypus Bear, and now his path to becoming Chief was secured. He smiled turning away from the pier and walking into the icy wreckage of the city. True the pain and deaths caused by the spirits would take years to heal and the damage would likely take months to repair but that mattered little to him. Why should it, he got what he wanted, and yet he felt an emptiness, yes he was going to become Chief of the Northern Water Tribe but it wasn’t enough. Not for him, he wanted more, but there was one problem with that, even if he merely sought to take the Southern Water tribe with that distance a fleet would hardly go unnoticed by the world, Avatar Aang would quickly catch on.
As he walked he continued to contemplate how to gain more power, passing out of the northern most gate of the city he had a thought. Aang’s time was likely to be short he was an old man, if the most powerful man on the Earth, and time was against him. Unalaq smiled, the next Avatar would be of the water tribe, it could easily be his child if he were to have one. Their family had a strong spiritual affinity, especially himself. All he needed was to have a child born around the time of Aangs death, true it would not be the easiest thing to plan but it would not be impossible. He waved his hand and a small pillar of ice rose up under him giving him a view of the entire city. A sinister smile crawled across his face as he gazed over his homeland. He knew plenty of women in the tribe would love to be the bride of the future chief, manipulating one of the more naïve women would be simple enough.
What Unalaq did not know however, was that one of the dark spirits was still there, having avoided his calming technique, and was watching him. In the spirit world, right on the other side of the portal in the Northern water tribe, the most ancient of darkness’s had awoken, Vaatu, the ancient spirit of chaos and darkness. He saw through his servants eyes a prideful power hungry Water Bender, the perfect opposite to that worm Wan who ten thousand years ago imprisoned him in this wretched tree with Raava’s help. Harmonic convergence was fast approaching, in a mere twenty years the battle between he and Raava would happen again. Vaatu laughed causing his prison to shake, he would have his own vessel this time, and he would strip from Raava, and whoever her next “Avatar” was, all they held dear.
“Spirits curse my brother to the depths of the Abyss” Unalaq shouted as he slammed his fist into wall of his study. It had been five years since he’d gotten rid of his brother and began plotting to have control of the next Avatar. His guess had been right, Aang had died earlier in the year, and his plan to have children near the time was almost perfect. Like a persistent Penguin Seal however his brother once again stood between him and his goals. Tonraq’s daughter Korra was born at the moment of Aangs death and proved to be the Avatar instead of either of his children. Even more irritating Tonraq had continued to refuse his offers to teach the girl about the Spirit world and the tribe’s spiritual culture, removing the other possible way for him to control her. His blood boiled as he thought of how he could destroy Tonraq.
“How is it, that for the second time in my life I find my brother between me and my ambition. What kind of joke is the Universe making. How can that spiritually disconnected oaf be the father of the Avatar!” He shouted to the heavens. He walked out onto his balcony looking out towards the distant remains of the Spirit Forest, contemplating what his next move would be, once again failing to notice the presence of the Dark Spirit that had been watching him for the last four years, watching his growing lust for power and his growing hatred.
Today would soon change that however, as the batlike spirit suddenly flew from its hiding place and hovered in front of Unalaq. Unalaq’s eyes widened as he readied himself to attack the spirit but before he could the spirit flew through him, filling his mind with a promise that it could lead him to someone who would give him what he wanted. Unalaq fell to his knee’s for a moment then looked up at the spirit. All he need do is enter the spirit world. It merely hovered there serving as an eye piece to Vaatu.
“Very well spirit, if you can indeed lead me to someone I will enter the spirit world with you.” The sinister smile crawling across his face told Vaatu all he needed to know, this would be far too easy.
Soon Unalaq was following the spirit deep into the wilderness to a cave within the old Spirit Forest. There he saw it, the sealed Spirit World Portal glowing brightly. The spirit bat flew in a circle in front of it and Unalaq nodded sitting before the glowing energy and began meditating. He felt the immense spiritual energy in this chamber, overwhelming energy as if he were in an ocean. Soon the weight of the energy lifted as he opened his eyes and found himself out of his body standing in the Spirit World. He found himself in front of a massive tree with a sphere of elemental energy at the center. He looked around at the wasteland surrounding him and saw two sphere’s of energy like the one he had been sitting before in the mortal realm. He walked up to the tree and saw a massive spirit inside, black as night with red markings glowing like the hate he felt for his brother.
“Welcome human, you stand at the center of the Spirit World, where once the portals allowed travel between the worlds. This was the birth place of the first being your kind would come to call Avatar.” The spirit spoke, it’s voice powerful, commanding.
“And who are you Spirit? Why is it you are trapped here?” Unalaq asked, looking up at the spirit in awe. Then he thought, and added another part. “And what do you mean this is the birth place of the Avatar?”
“Patience, and I will explain it to you. I am Vaatu great spirit of Chaos and Darkness. Ten Thousand Years ago and for eons before that before your kind had even crawled from the mud, I and my counterpart Raava waged battle for control of the world, light and dark at constant war with the world balanced between us. Then Ten Thousand Years ago a human known as Wan, released me from Raava’s grasp giving me free reign over your world. At the date Raava and I were to battle, at the Harmonic Convergence, that worm and Raava battled with me, and merged into what you now know as the Avatar Spirit. He trapped me in this tree and sealed the portal, and only the power of the Avatar can fully release me. Get the Avatar to open the portals in seventeen years, and force her to free me, and I will give you power beyond even what all the Avatars have had.” The spirit, Vaatu, said looking down at Unalaq who couldn’t believe it, this ancient spirit knew of the oldest Avatars, and offered him power, power to rule the world, power to sate his thirst. However, could this be too good to be true.
“How do I know what you offer me is truly greater than I can imagine Vaatu, I can imagine much power that I could gain even without your aid.” Unalaq said, hesitant to automatically agree to Vaatu’s offer. The Dark spirit merely laughed.
“You wish to know if what I offer you is true? Very well human. I will show you, I cannot break free of my prison fully but I can do this…” Vaatu laughed as a black spiked tendril suddenly slipped through the energy field and impaled Unalaq through the heart, but not physically.
Unalaq cried out in pain for an instant, closing his eyes, then when he opened himself he found himself standing on a balcony overlooking a city, which itself overlooked what looked to be the burning remains of Republic City. Dark Spirits and Benders with glowing red eyes and wearing and carrying the symbols bore on Vaatu’s form were attacking the city and tearing down Aangs statue. The sky above him was red and the battlefield was ravaged by fire fissures and floods. Then he saw a figure flying up from the city towards him, he wasn’t sure who it was for a moment, her outfit was water tribe, but she was clearly airbending, and that face, so familiar. Then he snapped, he was seeing the future, this beautiful woman, was Korra his niece, something was off about her though she was glowing with the same blood red pattern of Vaatu and her eyes were like Aangs in the Avatar state, only red instead of blue white. She landed in a kneeling position before him holding something wrapped in cloth under her arm.
“Master, it is done, as you requested. Your brothers head.” She said her voice echoing in a twisted dark manner. Then she reached into her pouch and pulled out a small energy sphere containing a spirit similar to Vaatu but white and blue, small fragile looking.
“You’ve done well Korra, soon I will show you how to use the four elements to their full potential, and then, how to master darkness. But for now, go, spread chaos in my name and the name of Vaatu, spread the word of the Chaos Avatar my dear apprentice.” He spoke but he didn’t think the words, as if he were watching his body from inside his body.
“Of course master. It will be done.” She left the wrapped up parcel on the ground as he took the sphere from her. She leapt off the balcony laughing evilly as she raced towards the city.
“Such a talented bender..” His body commented as he looked down at the spirit, who he realized must be Raava. “So Raava, ten thousand years ago you and your friend Wan defeated Vaatu as the Avatar, and now you are defeated by Vaatu and myself as the Chaos Avatar…how the tables have turned haven’t they? I have freed Korra from your influence and given her a small amount of my power so she may keep her ability to bend all elements. And you? Have no allies anymore, no mortals know of your presence, or your existence anymore. You will remain trapped forever, in a most ironic place, as a crown jewel for my new throne in my and Vaatu’s palace from which our darkness and chaos will spread over the world. Enjoy your eternity Raava.” He heard himself laughing as the image melted away and he found himself on all fours gasping for breath before Vaatu again. He looked up at the spirit as the bladed tendril pulled into the energy field. Unalaq could tell even that brief forcing out was a strain on the spirit’s power.
“You have seen the future as it will be if you join me human. Now do you accept my generous offer?” Vaatu spoke. This time Unalaq felt his body tremble at the voice. He could feel the spirits power now more than ever.
“Vaatu..Master…I accept your most gracious offer in return for the power you offer.” Unalaq said pulling himself to his feet, he felt weak, drained, as if he was on the cusp of death, his body shaking but he forced himself to stand. Vaatu laughed and for a moment Unalaq thought his legs would give out.
“Good choice human. Return to the spirit world through meditation as often as you are able, and I will repeat what we have already begun, each time I repeat the process of impaling you your spirit and your body will slowly be converted to be able to withstand our merging. And then, on the day of Harmonic Convergence we will combine our power and our shared goal will finally be achieved.” Vaatu laughed and Unalaq couldn’t help but join him in laughing at their plan.
Unalaq clenched his fists as the bladed tendril of Vaatu burrowed through his spirit and his body. He had grown more accustomed to the sensation but still as the end of each session drew close he felt the same pain. His body could still only take the presence of the powerful Spirit for an hour at most. Unalaq was concerned by this due to Harmonic Convergence being only a few weeks away. However Vaatu assured him that on that day it would not matter how long he could contain him so long as he touched the combined energies of the gates.
“You know the plan human, I will send a dark spirit to attack the festival, you will use your technique to calm it and convince Korra to open the Southern Portal, from there what you do to protect the portal is up to you. But remember you must make Korra open the Northern Portal from the outside first. Then bring her to me on the day of Harmonic Convergence when the planets align. Trick her into freeing me or force her if you must, but once I am free you will have your reward, and your niece as your most powerful soldier.” Vaatu said to Unalaq as he finally ripped the tendril from Unalaq’s spirit.
“Yes…Master….” Unalaq panted, the pain was worse each time, as if less of him remained. Vaatu had told him that it was part of the process, his body was becoming less human much like the Avatar’s, becoming capable of containing another spirit. Whatever it was, it left him on his knees gasping for breath sweat on his brow and pain wracking his soul.
“Pull yourself together human, you must journey to the South Pole soon, remember only the Avatar can open the gates. However if you fail to bring her here, she will be drawn here by her spirit, we will have her here one way, or another.” Vaatu laughed. “Now, go, begin the first step of our plan.”
Unalaq nodded and he faded from the spirit world returning to his body so he could enact the first phase of their plan. Vaatu laughed again. The pathetic worm didn’t know the truth of what Vaatu’s plan was. And even after 17 years still thought he would get to enjoy the false future he had been shown. Vaatu had no plans to share his victory though. When he found out about the new Avatar being a mortal female far more brash and reckless than Wan he knew this was too perfect a chance to pass up. For the past decade he had been slowly destroying that which made Unalaq, Unalaq, both physically and spiritually. He was a hollow vessel and a blank slate except for a few trace remnants of his mind that were needed to enact the plan.
Vaatu had planned to destroy all the Avatar held dear but, the development of it being Korra gave him the chance to take it one step further. He again gazed on the future his plan would lead to. But this time it was not Unalaq standing on the balcony, merely a shape that looked like him. Even spirits were more human than the thing Vaatu had slowly been turning Unalaq into. As with the vision he showed Unalaq Korra arrived with her father’s head and Raava’s trapped form. However she did not greet her uncle.
No, Vaatu the being standing before her, the being who had corrupted and twisted her mind, she greeted with a passionate kiss. Vaatu laughed to himself, his plan for revenge would truly be complete, not only would Raava loose her precious Avatars for eternity, but her most recent Avatar would become his bride, and be used to create the new beings he would populate the world in, the world he would remake into his own image. He turned his gaze from the view of the future to the ship Korra was on. She had no idea what Vaatu had planned for her, he gazed upon the beautiful form of the being he would turn into his bride, and were he capable he would have smiled. Soon Korra, he thought, your world will be destroyed, and you will be the instrument through which I get the greatest vengeance of all.
