As You've seen, I've let Hearts of Iron sit until IV comes out. Until then lets play -
An absolute fantastic game during the set entirely in the 18th century (with the Darth mod). The time of Empire! The time of muskets, bayonets, cannon, colonies and high sea adventure. Lets get started.
For my nation, I choose something obvious - Prussia. Pretty much the nation that eventually becomes Germany and is highly militaristic due to its founding by an order of rock hard knights of the Teutonic Order. Incredibly tough bastards who valued military strength, order and well trained forces.
Anyway. Need to get forty territories by the end and as you can see.... we got a long way to go. Prussia is strong, but very much small. Germany was not born of politics, ideas or deals. It was forged at bayonet point by waves of Prussian infantry rolling over their neighbors. Even then, we must tread carefully and pick out fights. We got to build up strength before we take on the major powers.
Here's our capital.... Berlin (obviously).
Very large and well fortified city. Got a number of holdings around the province and a port for trade. Is a good province and well suited for future conquest ^^.
And here is the only other province we have.
Separated and surrounded by Polish lands from Berlin. Never the less, a good province with a large garrison and currently the only standing army we have.
Objectives along with the rather derp face of our leader.
The prestige page.
Don't expect me to win this page.... England will be far ahead before too long unless I attack them.... and then I'd have to build boats and attack their navy... Which is suicide almost 75% of the time. So yeah.
Faction page -
Yes, we are at war with somebody already. Pirates and the Barbary States. But they're pretty much pirates already, so whatever.
Here's research... - rather boring, but whatever. Only got one college, so I can only research one at a time.
Diplomacy. As you can see, its fairly blank for now beyond the obvious.
Right! Fun stuff now. Our first target -
Saxony! Its a minor faction with just a single province. Usually only defended by militia (aka - Trash infantry, only slightly better than worthless pike men). I've infiltrated a spy to tell me their forces and defenses and I'm building an army in Berlin to take the Dresden by siege. Should be easy. However.... they are 'allied' to Poland, and while the Poles are rubbish at fighting, they are quite large, so our holdings in the East needed to be strengthened as well for the Polish assault. I'm not too worried though.
Our major competitors are as follows. Sweden, Poland and Austria. They must be conquered, but we got to be smart about it for obvious reasons.
For the time being, our only army will hide in the woods and begin to receive reinforcements form the town so it can fight the Poles when they invade.
As I've said before, pikemen are worthless. Why? Because they have no ranged attack, they're only good against horsemen (which out pace them easily) and this:
This turns all musketmen to pikemen in a pinch and they become worthless. So we're gonna get rid of all our pikemen (and crap militia) and just train line infantry.
Further proof militia is crap:
Back to Saxony, here's their forces.
Three crap militia units, one useless pike unit, one general, one gentlemen cavalry unit and one artillery unit. Weak. But.... this game does hold surprises.
Also, another reason why this game is awesome? Historical events are noted!:
Confirmed, pikemen now useless. Throw them back into the field to farm!
Another historical event. Now with scientific experimentation!
Historical printing!
Attacking Dresden with out superior might. Its got some walls, so we'll just wait them out. No use wasting infantry, especially when the citizens join the defenses.
Eastern province suitably hardened.
Our first battle! The foolish Polish are ambushed in their first action. Thankfully all they really brought is crap units.
Our general is unimpressed with the enemy.
The cannons are place on the high ground. They brought no cannons so we'll let them come to use and get blasted in the mean time.
Our infantry form a line and await the enemy.
Enemy crap infantry moving up.
I must admit, at least the Polish crap militia are well dressed.
Enemy moves within range and we see the reason why smokeless powder was invented.
Pikemen charge our lines. Look surprised when my musketmen school them.
Pikemen fleeing. Our infantry chase them.
Obviously running is really never a good idea. Especially when hundreds of bayonets are chasing them.
Pikemen break again and my infantry are ordered to stop. They decide to shoot the fleeing enemy without orders at point blank range. Brutal.
Enemy stage a final stand at a stone wall.
Doesn't really help.
I break off the chase with my cavalry and let a few run to safety.
General still not impressed even as Sergeant Blue Santa stands by his side.
Poles lose badly.
After the battle, suspicious activity around the border with Austria noted.
Poles attack the very next turn.... wut?
A rather cold day for a battle.
Enemy cavalry charge with obvious results.
Pointless battle :/
With the Polish already reeling, I see an opportunity to break their backs on one side and connect my lands. I'll wait this out as well, time is still on my side.
The Polish are caught flat footed and only turly have enough forces nearby for defense, time to be aggressive. However, their capital will still be tough to crack.
The other siege goes well and their units lose men as they die of hunger and disease.
Anyway, that's it for now. Thoughts, wants or criticisms? Any objectives you want? Do you want America? England humbled? India colonized?
