This is a compilation of the best games to come out every year when videogames have been released. There's 3 parts. First is very old games that came out long before I was was born and I haven't played (for the most part), so they've been picked through looking up stuff about them. Second is games from "my time" up to now. Third is just a couple future predictions. In some parts there are multiple entries for the same year, they should be in order but not necessarily.
Part One: Ancient Times:
GOTY 1962 Spacewar!
A 2-player ship battle game that takes place in the gravity well of a star and follows newtonian physics.
GOTY 1968: Hamurabi
A text-based game where you have to be an effective ruler for 10 years.
GOTY 1969: Space Travel
A 2D simulation of the solar system, you have no goal except landing on the different planets and moons as you traverse. The ship is affected by gravity but only by the biggest current source.
GOTY 1971: Computer Space
A space combat arcade game, was the 1st arcade machine and the 1st videogame available commercially.
GOTY 1972: Pong
Y'all know that one.
GOTY 1973: Laser Clay Shooting System
Think of it like an older Duck Hunt of sorts, as far I could find, this is the 1st videogame made by Nintendo.
GOTY 1974: SpaSim (Space Simulation)
Believe it or not, a 3D networked game, with 32 players. Making it the 1st 3D game, for a measure of "3D" anyway.
Elimination
This is literally just a 4-player version of Pong.
GOTY 1975: DnD
Nothing much to explain, it's DnD.
GOTY 1976: Colossal Cave Adventure
One of the precursors for adventure, role-playing and roguelike genres.
GOTY 1977: Zork
Another interactive fiction like Colossal Cave, it was advertised as a must-have for computer owners and even as a selling point for buying a computer in 1977. It was considered so good by critics that some of them said making sequels to it was like treading on sacred ground.
GOTY 1978: Adventureland
A text-based adventure game with pictures.
Snake
Y'all know that one too.
GOTY 1979: Avatar
A multiplayer RPG, it can be played online right now if anyone is interested.
GOTY 1980: Pacman
GOTY 1981: Asylum
A sorta 3D FPS (but not really) text-adventure.
GOTY 1982: The Hobbit
Was a best-seller on it's platform(ZX Spectrum and C64), won the Golden Joystick Award for best strategy game, was considered the best of it's genre except for Zork.
GOTY 1983: Excalibur
When it came out it was called "one of the finest programming achievements", "a grand effort", "magnificent" and "one of the richest gaming experiences ever".
Ultima III Exodus
Credited as the foundation of RPGs, said to have "far surpassed" its predecessors and having a "masterful plot"
GOTY 1984: Tower of Druaga
The foundation of Action RPGs
GOTY 1985: Wishbringer
Interactive Fiction genre, got near-perfect and perfect review scores.
