So, as of now, I haven't really done too much of the writing for a Sci-Fi universe I'm making. However, I do have several of the rules/races/general stuff that its gonna be about, so I figure I'd put all that here. I'll be adding as it goes along, so stay tuned. For things that remain unnamed, or things that I'm unsure of the name, please feel free to suggest a name. Feel free to suggest anything actually. Criticize, praise, whatever. So, this is the Ephemera Universe.
The Intro
Humanity, while we were still on Earth, had greatly advanced our military capabilities. We eventually got to the point where no major powers could get into a war, or allow a war to happen without horrible consequences. So, we prospered. We still focused on military advancements, particularly space travel and warfare, which at this time had limited uses, but we focused even more on improving the world. Over time people's lifespans doubled, and then tripled. Living 150+ was the norm. Food was aplenty, and while there was still a poor and rich class, the "poor" of that day were still living full lives. It was a wondrous time.
And, of course because this is a origin story, stuff gets f***ed up.
You see, all this was well and good......but the population of Earth was exploding. People weren't dying, and neither were they lacking of children. So we starting going underground, now having the capabilities and the resources that we did. But then that filled up. So we made ocean cities, populated the skies, and filled almost every bit of Earth we could. But even that, as was evident to many world leaders of countries and companies alike, was not going to be enough. We had to go out into the stars. So, in a massive cross continental effort, we terraformed the moon. We made it livable. It took awhile. First we had to put up atmospheric shields, and then generate enough oxygen to make that liveable. Then we had to build. But, over several of decades, it worked. We could live on the moon. And then when humanity realized that we could do that with many of our other neigboring planets, we ran with it. First of course was Mars. That was relatively easy. Then came Venus. There had to be a more powerful atmospheric shield to block off the suns heat, but it worked.
Then came Mercury. Mercury took centuries. We actually managed to build bases in planets like Jupiter and Pluto using long-term probes and ships before we tamed the heat of the sun and made Mercury livable. And then we made a shocking discovery. Essentially, it was a mineral that, when ignited, created a PHENOMENAL amount of energy. But not just that, it allowed us faster than light speeds of travel. This is skipping over A LOT of details, but long story short, we could now explore our galaxy.
We eventually managed to make all the planets in our solar system into livable environments. By this time we numbered close to three trillion. Earth looked like a sun of its own, with all the lights from its countless cities covering it completely. The Moon became a major military outpost, used to defend Earth. Mars was drained of its metals, as were all other solid planets, converted into City Planets, or allowed to completely disappear. The Asteroid Belt was all but eliminated.
And just when we thought we had the universe figured out, something incredible happened: We found out, that we were not alone.
The first race we met we nicknamed Hoppers. They essentially were an insectoid race, though they were definitely sentient. We figured that they were in their equivalent of a nuclear age, but there was no cold war. They had a different type of nuclear fuel than us though. When we landed, they first regarded us as gods. We had a hell of a time trying to communicate with them, but through a series of images on a screen, thank goodness they had developed a type of TV for their uses, we managed to over a decade form a language that we could pronounce as well as they could. We named it Allspeak, for obvious reasons. Over the course of making Allspeak, we discovered that their "nuclear" fuel was quite powerful, though not nearly as strong as the mineral we had used on Mercury that allowed us to go FTL. But, it had another strange property, one of which we hadn't been able to master before: It was incredible as splicing DNA with almost anything. We discovered this when a scientist was holding some over a fire. Some of it dripping off of the main rock, and landed on his wrist. As soon as it landed, he starting screaming, thrashing around, and inexplicably had liquid fire coming out of his every pour. He sadly died from the experience, but when his body was examined, he had been found to die because his own body had seemed to have used several of his vital organs, as well as a lot of muscle and fat, for energy. Several experts said he looked like he had been starved for weeks.
We discovered that if exposed correctly, the Hopper substance could essentially bind two things together, at a genetic level if one or both were living. It however drained the bodies of their energy to do this. We eventually discovered a way to create little pockets in peoples bodies, which allowed them to generate a power source from which to draw the energy to use these abilities from. It took years of training, but eventually they could gain control over these abilities, and using them to great effect. Eventually we had a fighting force we named the Warlocks.
The second race we discovered were giants. Their homeworld was massive, as were they. We found them to be very war like, and when we first encountered them we had a bit of a surprise coming to us. See, their world was mostly in a medieval, or feudal age. While we later learned that they had six times in history advanced to the point of developing WMDs before blasting themselves back into the Stone Age, we thought them primitive. We were wrong. When the first party landed, they were charged by a Warlord and some of his troops, him standing twelve feet tall, the rest about ten to eleven. They managed to shoot the steel clad warriors that were with the Warlord, but when they shot the armored completely with plates from head to toe Warlord, nothing happened. He ignored it. Then they brought out what they had considered to be overkill, the Dragonfire laucher. This had been designed with the smallest amount of anti-matter in it, within a sealed container. When it hit, shit blew up. They shot it at him. It connected, there was a thirty foot wide blast radius. As the smoke cleared, the looked down into the smoldering crater. The Warlord was getting up, looking VERY angry that he had just fallen into this crater, but other wise completely fine. Then he managed to reach them. And promptly cut them to shreds with his sword.
So, this is the end for now. I'm just trying to set it up. I'm going to be polishing it out A LOT, and finishing loose ends and such, as well as changing the format, the stories, the names of things, ect.
The Listing
Races:
Humans - The ones that started it all.
Appearance: You know what they look like.
Hoppers - Generally peaceful, very much so oriented towards the whole more so than themselves.
Needs: Need a better "official" name for them.
Appearance: They look like a mix of Bug's Life grasshoppers and District 9 aliens to give a visual.
Giants - Big, mean, and very war-like.
Needs: Need a good name.
Appearance: Think of a average mediveal person: dirty, lacking hygiene, rough, had to work hard in life, often scarred from their life. Then make them significantly bigger and stronger.
Fictional Material:
The Mercury Mineral - Allows the humans to go FTL.
Needs: A name
The Splicing Substance - Allows genetic splicing. Basically this universes magic.
Needs: A name, maybe some extra stuff.
